Ever heard the saying one size fits all? While this may be true for some articles of clothing or perhaps a piece of jewelry, the same can not be said for office chairs. With people varying in shape and size, not all office chairs can accommodate every individual’s needs, calling for the need for speciality chairs. The truth is most office chairs are designed for individuals that weigh less than 250 pounds and that are between the heights of 5’4″-5″10. But what about everyone else? Well luckily, if you happen to be a little bit bigger or taller than what is considered to be average, there are chairs designed just for you, big and tall office chairs.
Why should you get a big and tall office chair?
If you have ever worked in an office before, you probably have come to find that everyone sits in the same exact office chair. You may have also noticed that bigger or heavier people often have a difficult time sitting with correct posture. This is due to the fact that these individuals are not suited for a standard office chair. For someone that is taller, the wrong seat size can lead to many problems including not getting enough support for their thighs and having to shift around awkwardly to try to sit in a comfortable position. Even sitting all the way back in their chair, taller users can have their legs extended out much farther than everyone else’s. This leads to sitting with improper posture which eventually will lead to back pain and aches.
For heavier users, they may find components of their chair breaking off or wearing down much quicker than other users. This is because, as aforementioned, most chairs are only designed to hold up to 250 pounds therefor their parts are only designed and created for this weight capacity. Failed cylinders, which cause the seat height to longer be adjustable, are among the most common problems experienced with a chair that has a weight capacity less than its user along with broken armrests and chair wheels. Understandably, this can become a safety hazard and quite possibly, a legal issue.
In order to pick the right big and tall office chair for you, it is important to look for certain adjustable features on your new potential office chair prior to purchasing. The first feature to look for is a seat slider, which allows the user to adjust the depth of the seat by pulling the seat out and adjusting its length. This is especially important for those that are taller and need that extra seat coverage to fully support their thighs.
Another important adjustment to consider is the cylinder, which allows for the chair to be adjusted up and down. A chair with a standard size cylinder may not be adequate for those that are taller and need that extra height to sit with their knees at a 90 degree angle and feet placed firmly on the floor. Specialty big and tall chairs sometimes come with varying cylinder heights to accommodate the needs of taller individuals. One manufacturer in particular that offers different cylinder heights as an option with their chairs is ErgoCentric.
Measurements to Consider
Before purchasing a big and tall chair there are certain measurements that should be taken into consideration before making the purchase. The first measurement that should be looked at is the depth of the seat. Most standard size seats are around 19″ deep; if you are taller you will want to try to find a seat that can be adjusted to at least 21″ with a seat slider to ensure you fit comfortably while sitting. Another measurement to consider is the seat height of the chair. Leg strain and stiffness can occur if your legs are bent an unnatural angle from sitting on a chair that is too short. Lastly, the height of the chair’s back is another crucial measurement. A chair with a small back rest will not provide the support necessary for a taller individual and may lead to unnecessary back, shoulder, and neck pain.
A common concern for most, understandably, is the cost of the product. Unfortunately, big and tall chairs can cost a pretty penny, with most costing somewhere in the range of $300-$600, with some costing even more than that. The reason for this high price is the quality of materials used to construct the chair to ensure that it can hold higher capacities while providing the user comfort and support. While it may seem like quite the investment, if you spend long hours a day sitting at work, the added comfort you will receive will improve your productivity and make for a more enjoyable work environment.
Whether you are looking to purchase a big and tall chair for your personal home office or looking to meet the needs of several of your employees, consider the above recommendations when looking to find the right big and tall office chair to meet your needs or the needs of others.

When it comes to office chairs, there is no one size fits all solution. The right chair choice for an individual depends on a variety of factors such as height, weight, pre-existing pains or ailments, level of support needed, the height of the desk the chair will be fitting under, and more. As made evident, it can get somewhat difficult figuring out which chair will be the right fit for you, especially if you are on the taller side. If an individual is over six feet tall, even executive high back chairs may not provide the necessary back support which may lead to upper back neck and neck pain. There is also the seat depth that is an area for concern for taller individuals. If the seat is not long enough to fit the users thighs, this will not allow for correct sitting posture and will put more pressure on the knees and thighs. In order to avoid unnecessary pain and better yet, an unnecessary purchase, it is important if you are taller to determine which kind of office chair is going to work best for you. The term used to describe chairs for taller individuals is simply known in the office furniture industry as “tall office chairs”, and it is a good place to start especially if your search will be taking place online.
When you first embark on your search for a tall office chair, the first thing you will want to look for is the chair’s back dimensions. If you are looking for a tall office chair online, this can typically be found in the product information section or product specs area. All chair manufacturers take the time to take specific measurements of their chairs before they are released to the public in order to avoid returns being made because a chair did not fit a person properly. If the information is not readily available on the website you are looking at, call to inquire and the sales representative should be able to look up the information. Start by looking at high back or executive office chairs because typically these chairs’ back heights are higher than managers chairs or task chairs. You will want a chair that will provide complete upper back support in order to avoid shoulder or neck pain. Have a friend use a tape measurer to measure your back from the top of your shoulders down to where you would be seated on the office chair. After you have that measurement, look for the back height on the chair of your choice and see if it goes a few inches above your back height. If the back of the chair is shorter than your back height, the chair may not provide the support you will need.
After you determine the ideal height for the backrest of your chair, your next concern is making sure your thighs will fit properly on the seat. The average seat depth on any given office chair is typically about 19 inches deep, however, if you are taller most likely this means you have longer legs. Longer legs requires a longer seat to ensure that your thighs will fit properly across the entire length of the seat without a lot of extra room between the back of your knees and the edge of the seat. Some high end chair manufacturers such as ErgoCentric Seating have a special upgrade option that allows the user to choose a longer seat of 21 inches deep. Another great way to solve the problem of having a seat that is too short is to look for chairs that have a seat slider option. A seat slider allows the user to adjust the depth of the chair by pulling up on a lever generally located underneath the front of the seat. When this lever is pulled up, you can then bring the chair forward or back to make the seat either longer or shorter depending on your needs.
The last step to ensure that your tall office chair will be the right choice for you is to determine the height of the cylinder on the chair. The cylinder is simply the device that allows your seat to move up and down. If a cylinder does not allow your seat height to go up high enough you may find yourself sitting at an awkward and uncomfortable angle. Ideally, you would want to sit with your feet firmly planted on the floor with your knees bent at a ninety degree angle. If your current chair you sit in now is at the proper height, measure the length of your leg from your knees to the floor. This will give you a good indication of how high your chairs’ seat should go up to. If you simply can not find a chair with a seat range that does not fall within your height requirements, try opting to look at drafting chair options, as their cylinders are taller for extended height seating. Be wary of the height of your desk if you go for this option, because some drafting chairs will not fit under standard height desks. You may also want to look for chairs that come with different cylinder height options, again, some higher end manufacturers will carry this an upgraded option.
Although it may seem like there is no way that any chair could possibly fit all this criteria, fear not, because many manufacturers specifically design their chairs to meet the needs of taller individuals. Chairs designed for taller users will most likely have all three of the aforementioned features built into the design of the chair, rather than having to search for hours to find a chair that will possess all three. The Thorough Review:
The Mayline 6446AGL is our most popular Big and Tall Office chair for a) Big and Tall users, and b) Dispatch centers. It is very popular for the former because of the size of the chair – it is big and capable. The seat is wide and thick, using a high density foam that ensures the foam will withstand longer use by anyone. The back is tall too, which provides a a chair that can be used by a wider range of people.
The components that make up this chair are high quality and durable – for example, the chair has a steel reinforced plate on the bottom for support and longevity, and the chair comes with an oversize metal base as well. The foam is what we call High Density Foam – thicker and more durable than standard foam.
There are a few critical features that make this chair very nice – aside from the component makeup and durability. One is the pivot arm feature. The arms are capped in leather, and pivot upward out of the way for two reasons: 1. More space means more comfort and 2. It makes it easy to get in and out of the chair. The arms, although they pivot and are connected by a single point to the back of the chair, are durable and sturdy enough to put weight and support on, too. Another great feature of this chair is the inflatable lumbar support. While a very underrated feature, inflatable lumbar means the user can adjust the lower back pressure to exactly where they feel comfortable. It’s a very specific means of lumbar support.
Overall, a great chair. It’s really worth the additional dollars – instead of buying multiple chairs that keep breaking and aren’t comfortable for around $125 dollars, it’s a wise choice to invest in the durable and comfortable Mayline 6446AGL Big and Tall Office Chair.
Durability: Very, very durable. Steel reinforced plating means weight rating of up to 450 lbs.
Adjust-ability: It features two things that set it apart from other chairs – inflatable air lumbar and pivot arms that fold up.
It’s plush, and the top-grain leather is soft. However, it is not a “super soft sink into” type chair, since it is built more for long term comfort and durability.
Overall Rating (Not an average):
It’s one of SitBetter’s more popular chairs for a reason. Big, durable, comfortable – worth the price.

In the past I’ve brought you through my struggles to find the right office chair for my home office, and I’ve taken the liberty to bring you through the pains that were associated with an office chair that wasn’t ergonomically correct for me. Well, with the average height range of men from five-feet, six-inches up to six-feet even, I rank near the bottom of that average scale at five-feet and seven-inches. So, that means finding items that fit, like an office chair, is going to be a bit easier than for someone a lot taller than me.
It begs to question though, what about big and tall men? Where can they find big and tall office chairs?
But wait, let’s get something out of the way first. I know there are big and tall women out there who work in offices, but I’m working with some statistics. On average though, women do tend to be a bit shorter than men. In the United States alone women are roughly six-inches shorter.
Alright? Now, back to my blog.
Out of nearly one-billion men in the world, almost sixteen-million are over six-feet tall. So, when it comes to finding big and tall office chairs what can they do?
In the past, decades actually, this segment of the population has literally had to squeeze into office chairs which were uncomfortable and clearly not ergonomically correct for their larger stature. Are there even big and tall office chairs? Of course there are and Sitbetter.com has a ton of them.
Big and tall office chairs are just as comfortable and stylish as any office chair for the average person. Depending on the model they can support up to five-hundred pounds, with wider seats and higher backs. The big and tall office chairs have the usual height adjustments, lumbar supports, and swiveling seats, and most of them have arm adjustments. For me? The arm adjustment is the key to keeping my elbows at the ergonomically required ninety degrees.
If you are in the upper echelon searching for the right big and tall office chair you should take some time and check out Sitbetter.com. We have a huge selection of big and tall office chairs and you’ll surely find the right fit for your body and your wallet.
